You know what, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first booked Artist Apartment Susi, but honestly, this place completely surprised me. Tucked away in Vienna, this 5-star gem sits right in the heart of the city’s artistic quarter, and I mean that literally – you’ll find yourself just a few steps from the Naschmarkt and within walking distance of the Museum Quarter. The building itself has this gorgeous fin-de-siècle facade that you’d walk right past if you weren’t looking for it, which I kind of love because it feels like you’re in on a secret.

The apartments here are what really got me though – each one is designed by a different local artist, so no two stays are ever the same (I stayed in what they call the “Blue Dreams” unit and the hand-painted murals were absolutely stunning). My room had these impossibly high ceilings and original hardwood floors that creaked just enough to remind you you’re in a historic building, but not enough to wake you up at night. The kitchenette was surprisingly well-equipped too – I actually ended up cooking a few meals with ingredients from the nearby Naschmarkt, and there’s something really special about making your morning coffee while looking out at the Karlskirche in the distance. Fair warning though, the elevator is one of those old-school European ones that’s basically a tiny box, so if you’re claustrophobic or traveling with massive suitcases, you might want to mentally prepare for that.

What really sets this place apart is how the staff treats you – they’re not hovering, but somehow they always seem to know exactly what you need. Maria at the front desk gave me the most incredible local recommendations (there’s this tiny wine bar on Schleifmühlgasse that I never would’ve found otherwise), and she arranged parking for me in a nearby garage when I mentioned I was driving in from Salzburg. The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like a local – you’re on this quiet side street off Rechte Wienzeile, so mornings are peaceful with just the occasional tram rumbling by, but you’re literally two minutes from all the action. The only minor downside is that some of the neighboring buildings have late-night restaurants, so weekends can get a bit lively around midnight – but honestly, that just adds to the authentic Vienna experience. I’ve stayed here three times now, and each visit feels like coming home to your artsy friend’s impossibly cool apartment.
